Bettie Page, the 1950s pin up sensation that set the stage for the 1960s sexual revolution, died Thursday in Los Angeles at age 85.

She was placed on life support last week after suffering a heart attack and never regained consciousness. Prior to the heart attack, she had spent three weeks hospitalized for pneumonia. According to her agent, Mark Roseler, Page’s family agreed to remove her from life support.

Bettie Page, also known as Betty, attracted national attention with her free spirit and unabashed sensuality as well as some of her more controversial pictorials showcasing sadomasochistic poses.

An iconic figure in popular culture, Page revolutionized and brought feminine sexuality to the forefront. She is the true embodiment of beauty that will forever leave a lasting legacy in our society, then in the 1950s, to now, and the future to come.
