I hate getting up early, but my wife is a runner and sometimes, that means waking up at 6 AM on a Saturday morning to drive her to a race. This week, that race was The CommUNITY Rainbow 4.9K run to raise support for The One Pulse Foundation and to honor the 49 victims of the deadly shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. While it’s a great cause, the thing that stuck out most to me as I wandered through all the sponsor booths was a tent with an R2 unit droid named R2-P49. The Droid, which was created to honor those that lost their lives in the tragedy is decked out in full rainbow colors and even featured the names of all the victims in a memorial on its side panel.

You can usually find the droid spreading love online under the hashtag: #BeepBoopIsLove, but it seemed like this would be a good time to point it out to you if you haven’t had made its acquaintance.

Credit for the creation of the droid goes to Joel Fritzinger, a member of the R2-D2 Builders Club, Southern R2 Builders, BB-8 Builders Club, 501st Legion and Rebel Legion.

R2-P49 is a full size, functional droid like R2-D2 except it is rainbow colored to honor the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando on June 12, 2016. The mission of R2-P49 is to spread love and honor. It also raises money and awareness for LGBTQ issues in our communities. Construction is now complete and all money raised will go to local charities.
