This one comes out of left field, but it looks like Star Trek isn’t limiting itself to the Picard series, Star Trek: Discovery, and the upcoming Michelle Yeoh spin-off. It turns out that they are also prepping an animated series (aimed at adult audiences) for Nickelodeon.

First, it’s interesting to note that this is going to Nick and not CBS All Access. They either think it won’t be big enough to draw new people to the network or they think it will be such a big crossover hit that they are afraid to limit like they have shows like Discovery, Twilight Zone and The Good Fight.

This also feels like the most irreverent CBS has ever been willing to get with their license. A big part of that will be in no small part to Kevin and Dan Hageman (The LEGO Movie) and the new show’s writer, Rick and Morty’s Mike McMahan.

A new, original CG-animated Star Trek series that follows a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation is in the works from Nickelodeon and CBS Television Studios…

“Star Trek’s mission is to inspire generations of dreamers to build a brighter future,” [executive producer Alex] Kurtzman said. “Dan and Kevin have crafted a story that honors its exploratory spirit in a way that’s never been done before, while the Nickelodeon team blew us away with their excitement at bringing Trek to a younger generation around the world.”
