When the Bumblebee movie hits theaters this Christmas, fans will finally hear one of the world’s favorite Autobots speak. However, while the studio had previously tapped classic Transformer voice actors Peter Cullen and Frank Welker to reprise their roles as Optimus Prime and Megatron, they’ve decided to take Bumblee in a different direction. Instead of bringing on Dan Gilvezan to reprise the role from the TV series and the original (and best) movie, it has been revealed that The Maze Runner’s Dylan O’Brien.

The film’s producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura had this to say in a new interview with IGN.

“Since we were approaching this as an origin story, we felt that it was appropriate that you got to hear his voice. That’s the simple logic that we employed. The longer-term implication of that is different. But the short-term implication of that is, since we really are resetting the mythology, essentially, of who Bumblebee is. “Dylan has that great quality in his voice of youthful exuberance, and also sort of trustworthiness. I think those are the two qualities that we wanted Bumblebee to have.”

While fans of the classic cartoon might bristle at the idea of replacing the voice of Bumblebee, reports from early screenings of the film point to the performance going over well among viewers.
