Between Pixels and Assassins’ Creed, it was looking like movie studios had learned their lesson about not making any more video game based films. Never mind, Studios never learn lessons and there are several movies based on games in the pipeline including: Tomb Raider, Altered Beast, Detective Pikachu, God of War, and the arcade classic – Rampage. When that one was announced, it sounded like we were being pranked. Then Dwayne Johnson got on board and it became all too real. In the end, we are left with one big question: How do you turn three monsters punching buildings until they fall down into a viable story? This is a question that Dwayne Johnson himself has taken to Instagram to answer. He even threw in some info on the VFX for the film as well.

Via Instagram:
I head up an anti poaching unit out of Rwanda. My best friend is a rare albino gorilla named, George. Very bad people infect George, an alligator and a wolf with a serum. All three animals grow at an unprecedented rate. Their size, speed, agility and violent aggression is off the charts. They go on a deadly rampage and want to destroy the world. George not happy. Me not happy. When animals like you, they lick you. When they don’t like you, they kill you. I will hunt down the bad people who did this to my best friend. And when I find them, I will not lick them.

We have the best VFX monster making team (WETA) on the planet. Our actors and crew have been working very hard to raise the monster genre bar. As always, let’s have some fun. Let’s shoot.

OK, does it sound like an Oscar Winner for best film? Probably not. At least now we know that the film will be more about Johnson finding the people responsible for creating the monsters than the monsters themselves. We also know that the monsters are going to look great. So, already this is set up to be better than either Pixels or Assassins’ Creed.
