Deadline as posted two new images of Helena Bonham Carter in Mike Newell’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic “Great Expectations.” The images gives us our first look at Carter as Miss Havisham, the “embittered spinster who sits in her mouldering mansion still wearing the wedding dress she wore when she was jilted at the altar; she has trained her adopted daughter Estella to break men’s hearts just as her heart was broken.”

While I absolutely adore Carter in every which way possible, “Great Expectations” is actually one of my all time favorites and there’s something about Carter that seems off. I’m not sure if she really fits the role. Maybe it’s the fact that she’s always played kooky characters or that she was recently a witch in Harry Potter… there’s just something that doesn’t look right to me as the wealthy bitter Miss Havisham. Or maybe it’s because I think the late Anne Bancroft was a much better casting.

“Great Expectations” will also star Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch, Jeremy Irvine as Pip, Robbie Coltrane, Sally Hawkins and David Walliams.

Currently Lionsgate is planning on releasing the film in the UK in 2012. Meanwhile, Unison Films is currently looking for a US distributor.
