It was several months ago that Adi Shankar not only announced he was making an R-Rated Castlevania animated series, but promised that it would be “the best fucking video game adaptation ever made to date.” Today we are getting our first look at the new series, which was written by comic icon Warren Ellis and animated by Frederator Studios, the team who created shows like Adventure Time, Bee and Puppycat, Bravest Warriors, and Oh Yeah! Cartoons.

The show, which is set to launch part 1 of season 1 on Netflix this July 7th, not only looks like it will keep true to promise of keeping it R-rated, but it also has a very heavy anime vibe that we were not expecting.

Inspired by the classic video game series, Castlevania is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series is from Frederator Studios, a Wow! Unlimited Media company, written by best-selling author and comic book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert and Adi Shankar.
