Amid growing support the public, the media, and the Guardians of the Galaxy cast for the reinstatement of director James Gunn after he was fired by Disney a week ago, there is a lack of chatter that speaks volumes.
In a report from Variety, there are some rumblings from inside Disney and Marvel Studios that there is a possibility that the director could be re-hired. A big catalyst for the speculation is that there has not been a new director named for the project as of yet. This is really surprising, given that the film is supposed to start production soon if it plans on keeping it’s scheduled release.
So, what’s the hold-up? Apparently, the final decision rests in the hands of Disney CEO (and rumored Presidential candidate) Bob Iger. The only problem is that Iger is currently on vacation. There’s a good chance that if a re-hire is to happen, it would not be until Iger comes back.
*** Update – In the 20 minutes since we sat down to write this post, a new alert popped up that Gunn and Disney will be sitting down very soon. At this point, it would seem like the decision to come back or not may rest on the shoulders of Gunn himself. There is a solid chance that he may have too bitter of a taste in his mouth towards Disney after this whole affair.
If he doesn’t come back, this puts the studio in a bit of a pickle. Along with writing and directing Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Gunn was set to help oversee the outer-space-themed next phase of the MCU.
