The news that we’ve been crossing our fingers about for weeks just came through a few minutes ago. Despite saying that he wasn’t sure if he would be involved in the Avengers sequel, Joss Whedon has just officially signed on to both write and direct ‘Avengers 2’ for Marvel/ Disney. The news was broken by Bob Iger at a shareholder’s meeting.

The great part is that there’s more to the deal than just the film. It was reported a little over a week ago that ABC was thinking about creating TV series that would work as an Avengers tie-in. It was probably going to be something about S.H.I.E.L.D. Now we know that the new deal includes having Whedon, who made his name on TV shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse, will be the man in charge of developing the new series.
