Move Over ‘Tomb Raider’, ‘Detective Pikachu’ Is Now The Highest Grossing Video Game Movie

Video Game Movies have never been massive earners. Well, at least ones that didn’t have Angelina Jolie front and center. Now it looks like her tight t-shirt has been outdone by a cuddly, electrically charged, Ryan Reynolds because Pokemon: Detective Pikachu has now officially taken the title of highest grossing video game film of all time away from Jolie’s first Tomb Raider film.

The current box office numbers for Detective Pikachu has the film at $412 million. That blows away Tomb Raider, which pulled in $357 million when it was released in 2001.

However, a closer look at the numbers might mean that the Pokemon movie should get an asterisk next to their new title.

While it’s true that Detective Pikachu earned more than $60 million more than Tomb Raider, that is without adjusting the income for inflation. When you take into account that the $357 mil was in 2001 dollars and apply inflation, Tomb Raider would have earned $516,524,542.37 in 2019 dollars. If that’s the case, Tomb Raider is still drinking Pikachu’s milkshake.

The numbers start to separate themselves, even more, when you consider the fact that Pokemon: Detective Pikachu opened in 4,202 theaters, while Tomb Raider only screened on 3,308. So, it looks like Tomb Raider may have actually done more with less.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter. In a steaming crap pile of video game movies, they are both gems.
