It’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything regarding Sam Mendes’ “Preacher” adaptation from the DC/Vertigo ultra violent and dark comedy series. The last we heard screenwriter John August was working hard on the first draft and he was still attached to direct.

But with the recent news that Mendes will direct the 23rd installment of the James Bond franchise producer Neal Mortiz says they are now looking for a new director.

Furthermore, Neal envisions shooting “Preacher” in 2011 and believes that August has written a great script. “John August wrote a script that I think is terrific,” Neals gushes.

According to Neals, the hardest thing with the Preacher script was to distill it down. He praises August for having the ability to spread out the story in several movies rather than just trying to cram everything into one”

“The hardest thing was with all the books-the Preacher books-was how to distill it down. And what he made the smart decision instead of trying to cram everything into one, there’s plenty of room for 2 or 3 movies. So that’s what he’s done and he’s done a really faithful adaption but made it probably more accessible to a broader audience right now.”

Lastly, Neals adds that, “That movie’s definitely R-rated and it’s an amazing central character.” And if they can’t find a new director? August himself who’s no slouch (The Nines) may even direct himself!
