A heated bidding war for the rights to ‘Day of the Triffids’ ended last night and Sam Raimi was the only man left standing.

The rights include the original novel by John Whyndham. The book was adapted into a horribly awesome sci-fi movie in 1962.

What’s the plot?
when a shower of meteorites lights up the sky, it creates such a gorgeous sight that most earthlings can’t help but look. So 99% of the population goes blind as a result, but it gets worse. The meteorites unleash Triffids, plants capable of moving around so they can better attack the blind.

Raimi is keen on directing the film himself and I can’t wait to see what he does with the story.
