Stallone’s ‘Cliffhanger’ Set For Gender-Swapped Reboot

Sylvester Stallone’s Cliffhanger wasn’t a great movie when it came out in 1993, but it was a lot of fun. It had action, mountain climbing and a cast that included Stallone, John Lithgow, Michael Rooker. Let’s not forget that it was directed by one of the biggest action directors of his day, Renny Harlin. Now, it has been decided from the studio on high that it is time for a reboot. Not just any reboot either, a gender-swapped reboot. the new film continues the trend of gender-swapped reboots and remakes that includes 2016’s Ghostbusters, Ocean’s Eight, and this year’s remake of Big, Little. The interesting thing here is that none of these films have been all that profitable for the studio.

The new version of the film is set to be directed by Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night), based on a script by Sascha Penn (Creed II). the movie will feature a female-led cast and may also include a cameo from Jason Mamoa. There’s no word on whether this will be a complete remake, or if it will follow the trend of semi-reboots by making the lead female Stallone’s daughter or something like that.

Here’s the original trailer -

Here’s the synopsis to the original film:
She was an experienced climber, she trusted him to rescue her, but something went wrong high above the valley floor and Gabe Walker (Sylvester Stallone) has been blaming himself ever since.

Unable to deal with the tragedy, Gabe quit his job with the Rocky Mountain Rescue team and fled from his cherished mountains, leaving behind his self-esteem, his friends and the woman he loves. Now he must return to those dreaded peaks, where he finds himself trapped in a desperate battle against ruthless criminals, unforgiving nature and himself in CLIFFHANGER.
