At one point there was a rumor saying that J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek 2” was not going to be able to make its June 29th, 2012 release date. That rumor has all but been confirmed by screen writers Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci.

In a recent interview, during the premiere of “Cowboys & Aliens,” the duo said that we shouldn’t expect the movie to begin shooting until January 2012, which rules out a summer 2012 release indefinitely, given the post-production blockbusters need. This also rules out a December release in 2012 as well, although theoretically getting it out by then isn’t out the realm of possibility. It would be a rush job however.

If “Star Trek 2” does come out in 2013, it has a chance that it’ll be up against some pretty stiff competition with the likes of “Superman: Man of Steel,” “Iron Man 3,” and “Thor 2.”
