The Syfy Channel which is owned by NBC Universal, is teaming up with Universal Pictures to began producing films under the new Syfy Films banner.

Syfy is best known for their science fiction TV series such as “Battle Star Galactica” and “Stargate” in addition to some of the intentionally worst TV movies ever such as “Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus.” Under the new banner, Syfy and Universal are planning to produce better budgeted movies once or twice a year ranging from the $5 million to $25 million mark.

The films as you guessed it will revolve around the world of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and supernatural similar to some of Syfy’s current popular programming. The first of the new Syfy Films/Universal Pictures joint venture projects is expected hit sometime in 2012.

Their goal will be to develop new potential franchises.

This unfortunately also means that Syfy Films will no longer be involved in the announced “Universal Battlestar Galactica” movie, which had Bryan Singer attached to developing and potentially also directing.
