A report from Very Vietnam is alleging that some Chinese food producers are manufacturing synthetic rice out of potatoes, sweet potatoes and plastic.

The report goes on to say that the “rice” is created through a mixture of potato material, shaped into grains and then finished with an “industrial resin” as a binding agent. The end result is what is essentially plastic rice but undetectable to the naked eye.

According to Very Vietnam these resins can be harmful if eaten. Going on to indicate exactly how much plastic is involved, the website says:

A Chinese Restaurant Association official said that eating three bowls of this fake rice would be like eating one plastic bag.

But why go to all the trouble to produce artificial rice? Money.

Synthetic “rice” is cheaper to produce than to actually growing rice and then harvesting it. If these allegations are true, they would would mark just another long line of tainted or defective products being produced from China — tainted milk, poisonous drywall, lead paint in children’s toys, etc.
