According to Al-Ahram (the most distinguished newspapers in Egypt) a twenty-something Egyptian man has named his first born daughter “Facebook” to express his gratitude for the role the social media service played in organizing the protests in Tahrir Square and beyond.
The girl’s family, friends and neighbors in the Ibrahimya region have expressed their continuing support for the revolution that started on Facebook. Meanwhile, “Facebook” herself has received many gifts from the youth who were overjoyed by her arrival and the new name.
Currently, there are over five million Facebook users in Egypt, more so than any other country in the Middle East/North Africa region. The website has since become the umbrella symbol for how social media can play a role in spreading the message of freedom and democracy in the MENA region.
