That’s right, during the cold war, The US actually had a plan on the table that involved nuking the moon just to show the USSR that we weren’t dicking around. It seems almost too stupid to be true, but that is what makes it all the more believable.
The project, called “A Study of Lunar Research Flights” or “Project A119,” for short was almost greenlit until the military realized that it could possibly hurt us Earthlings.
The worst part was that they used Carl Sagan’s calculations when planning this act of idiocy.
When asked, sources related to the plan said that the whole plan was designed as a way to “intimidate the Soviets.”
