Star Trek Fan Makes First Ever Fan Film… In 1971!

You can’t swing a dead cat on the internet nowadays without finding a couple dozen fan films. In fact, some people even make their living filming them now, but imagine what it was like to make one in 1971.

This Star Trek fan film from Ray Gasser was done as a final project for a TV production class back during his final semester at Ohio State University back in 1971.

As primitive as the film might be, it is still better than a lot of what shows up on Youtube today…. and he didn’t have any fancy editing software, just a one-inch reel to reel.

Oh, and in case you are wondering, Gasser got an A-

This is NOT the first Star Trek Fan Film ever made. The earliest one I know about, Jr. Star Trek, was made in 1969, and is discussed at my website (where you can also link to places you can watch it) here: .

Well, since this I have found an EVEN EARLIER Star Trek fan film from 1967! So I’m putting all the early ones in one place… Star Trek: The 8mm movie, Jr. Star Trek, and the rest of the films I find from the 1960s and 1970s are all now here:
