The long-awaited, but troubled live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is showing signs of life again today with the announcement of Daniel Dae Kim being cast as Firelord Ozai. Kim joins a cast that includes Kim joins previously announced series stars Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, and Dallas Liu. Cormier will star as Aang, with Kiawentiio set to play Katara. Ousley will play Sokka and Liu will play Zuko.
As the father of Prince Zuko, Ozai looms large over the entire Airbender story from the opening moments to the final battle. In the original animated series, he was voiced by Mark Hamill.
We won’t know what last year’s departure of original series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will mean for the story until it lands on Netflix, but all we can do now is hope for the best.
