‘Groundhog’s Day’ TV Series In Development

Goundhog’s Day is an iconic comedy classic. To this day, we still find ourselves saying “don’t drive angry.” Amazingly, it’s been 23 years since the film first came out in 1993, but love for the film has never really abated. That’s probably why we are now getting word that the story is about to see new life as a TV series.

News of the new show broke on the Production Meeting Podcast where original cast member, Stephen Tobolowsky let it slip:

There’s talk about a Groundhog Day series in the works. One of the producers – I was working on The Goldbergs or Schooled, one of those shows over on the Sony lot, and one of them saw me and goes, ‘Oh, Stephen! Stephen! We’re working on a Groundhog Day TV show. Could you be Ned for the TV show?’ I go, ‘Sure. Yeah. No problem’… But it’s Ned thirty years later. What has his life become?

If this turns out to be true, they could go a few different ways. It could center on one person, just like the original film. Or, they could make Punxsutawney some sort of mystical location that “groundhog day’s” people who need to look at the way they are living their life. If that’s the case, they could break it down into single episode anthologies, mini-arcs, or even a season per main character. Or, they could just troll everyone and repeat the pilot episode 12 times in a row.
