In an announcement that should be taken with a huge pillar of salt, THR is reporting that Ryan Gosling is in talks for the lead role in the upcoming Star Wars film from director Shawn Levy. I’m not saying you shouldn’t believe this, I’m just saying that the last six years are littered with over a dozen Star Wars films that were announced with a lot of excitement and then never made it to the finish line.
This could be different. Star Wars is looking like it’s trying to mount a comeback. Skeleton Crew was an excellent series and Andor season 2 is set to drop in just over a month. Additionally, Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu film has made it all the way to post-production (even though we have a feeling it would have been better served as the next season of the Disney+ series).
Another big factor is Shawn Levy. He’s riding high off of Deadpool and Wolverine and Disney is inclined to stay out of his way to keep him happy. Reportedly the script is already complete (though the details are under wraps). All we really know right now is that this film will be a stand-alone story. If the deal with Gosling goes through, we could see this movie easily getting pushed to the front of the production calendar.
