HeatVision reports that Paramount has hired screenwriting cousins Mark and Brian Gunn to write their remake of “The Monster Squad.”
Mark and Brian Gunn have been previously credited in “2gether: The Series,” the straight-to-video “Bring It On Again” and are currently working on the screenplay for the sequel to “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” titled “Journey to the Mysterious Island,” in development at New Line.
Rob Cohen (xXx, Stealth, The Mummy 3), who produced the original film, will produce and direct the new version. “The Monster Squad” remake is expected to be a family-oriented film and is eyed as a possible franchise.
The 1987 original, which Fred Dekker directed from a script he co-wrote with Shane Black, concerns a group of kids who discover a plot by Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Gill Man and The Mummy to try and take over the world. Cohen is already familiar with the latter creature, since he last directed the Universal sequel “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” which grossed $389 million worldwide.
