Star Trek Franchise Finally Confirms Sulu Is Gay

Well, it’s about time. For a franchise that featured the same mixed race kiss on television, it sure seemed to take a long time to announce something everyone already knew. Sure, in the original series, George Takei’s character wasn’t outed, but as the character an the actor became so interconnected in pop culture mythos, it just sort of made sense… to me at least. Now, Justin Lin and Simon Pegg have made it official in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond.

The film will feature a small scene that includes John Cho’s Takei, along with his partner and their daughter. It’s not a big deal in the film, it’s just part of normal life, as it should be.

News came out about the confirmation during promotion for the film in Australia. In the junket, Cho confirmed that Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty and also wrote the film, andDirector Justin Lin made the decision with Takei and the reality of the modern world in mind.

“I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out [of] it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicise one’s personal orientations.”
