With the unexpected success of Paramount and J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek’ reboot/prequelish-thing, you know the inevitable sequel is all just but guaranteed, and tentatively Paramount has announced that the sequel is expected to come out by Summer of 2011. But here comes the all important question of plot and casting.
According to blogger Brandon Bird, he supposedly has the scoop on the full cast of what he has labeled “Star Trek 2: The Next Generation.” Bird claims to have been sitting on this all summer and is just waiting to “confirm with my Hollywood sources.” We scoffed at this scoop mainly because there’s no possible way Paramount would cast a Next Generation movie when they just started branding the new First Generation franchise… not to mention, time wise, you’re talking 150+ years between the two generations.
Realistically, there’s no reason to have the two time lines going in their own series separately and Paramount would not scrap the entire first cast to make a Next Gen movie. When asked, according to our sources, “this is by far one of the dumbest things I’ve seen.”
Currently, the only thing that we can really confirm is that writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have all been re-hired to pen the currently unnamed Trek sequel. With that said, this casting isn’t an instant fail. I have to admit, it has potential if The Next Generation ever comes to fruition. Colored me impressed with the fan cast selection!
