Paige Smith’s Urban Geodes

We’ve seen graphitti artists turn vacant walls into art, and yarn bombers turn city scapes into cozy mittens, but this is the first time we’ve seen Paige Smith turn urban decay into beautiful geodes. The artist, who goes by the name “A Common Name”, finds the nooks and crannies of crumbled brick and broken windows and fills them in with folded paper crystals until squalor becomes a beautiful geode.

On her art, Smith says:
“Geodes are formations made and found in nature and my process of using manmade materials and placing them in major cities concurrently signals the tension between nature and industry and celebrates the beauty of urban space. My work is infused with a magical realism that encourages us to pause, to discover, to be present and to find beauty in the mundane.”
