There sure is a lot of Akira news right now. Just yesterday, we featured a story of the character sheet run-down for Taika Waititi’s upcoming live-action remake of the classic Manga/ anime. Today we’ve got news that there’s not only a 4K remaster coming of the original film, but that the manga’s creator, Katsuhiro Otomo, is currently developing a new anime series based on the property.
News of the new series dropped at Anime Expo during Otomo’s panel. He says that the new series will stick more closely to the original story and will feature story points from the original manga that were not included in the original film from 1988. The anime is set to be produced by Sunrise.
During the same panel, he also announced the 4K remaster of the 1988 film Akira, which will hit Japan on April 24, 2020. Along with the announcement, the following teaser was revealed.
