We all know about the reshoots on Rogue One, but very few people have known the true details of how the movie was originally set to end… until now.
In a new article from EW, we are finally learning about many of the changes that happened in the film’s story before its release. In an earlier interview Gareth Edwards admitted that they had initially planned for everyone to survive the film, mainly because they didn’t think Disney would OK all the carnage. Luckily, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy agreed when everyone told her the story would be better if everyone died. When that detail changed, so did a lot of other stuff.
– The original version of the ending didn’t include Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen), or Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen).
– Jyn Erso was originally written as Sgt. Erso, an enlisted soldier in the rebellion and not a criminal.
– Cassian Andor had a different, unreported name.
– The only team member that seems to have stayed intact through the changes is K2-SO. even his death was always planned to happen on Scarif.
– In the originally scripted ending, Jyn and Andor escape to the beach with the data tapes and are saved at the last moment by a rebel ship before the Death Star blows up Scarif. However, Vader would then blow up the ship before it reached Princess Leia and then he’d go after her.
Then we’d see, among the debris of the destroyed shuttle, an escape pod. They managed to escape the blast just in time and were later rescued, at which point they would have done a ship to ship data transfer of the Death Star plans.
Wow… am I glad they didn’t go that way.
