After confirming that he had been in talks for the role back at Comic Con, but then going silent as names like Joaquin Phoenix and Tom Hardy popped up as possible choices for Doctor Strange hit the media, it now looks like the Studio is circling back around.
Cumberbatch, who will next be seen in The Imitation Game, a film about one of the most prolific code breakers of WWII, is reportedly deep in talks for the role as we speak. Earlier he had said that he was out of contention for the role because he was set to play Hamlet in London, but it looks like that just isn’t a problem any more.
If you aren’t familiar with the character of Doctor Strange, he was a gifted, yet arrogant neurosurgeon who is left helpless after an accident that destroys his hands. On a quest to be healed eventually he becomes gifted with mystical powers, eventually earning the title of Sorcerer Supreme of Earth.
Standing in the way of Cumberbatch signing on will be his commitment to film the next series of Sherlock for the BBC.
