Can Ryan Coogler Make ‘Space Jam 2’ Worth Watching?

The short answer to that is probably not, but the Black Panther/ Creed director has signed on to produce a sequel to the 90’s cult classic with Lebron James in the lead role. The film has been in development for a couple of years now, but it seems like the additions of Coogler as producer and Terence Nance as director has brought it all together.

In a new interview with THR, James said that he was thrilled to have Coogler on board because, before him, there was no such thing as a black superhero. Leaving aside the fact that Lebron James apparently has no idea about black superheroes like Blade, Green Lantern, Static Shock, Black Lightning, Storm, or any of the countless others it does at least sound like his heart is in the right place with the project. He went on to say this:

“The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie. It’s so much bigger. I’d just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don’t just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people.”

Production is set to begin after the end of the NBA season in 2019.
