If you thought the Tetris movie was the bottom of the creative barrel, guess again. Deadline is reporting that the long running reality TV series that has been airing in one form or fashion since 1989, is set to be the subject of a new film, helped by Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer. On the off chance that you’ve never heard of the show, Cops is exactly what it tells you in the title. It’s cameramen riding along with and following cops as they take down the bad guys.
Deadline describes the film treatment as “edgy narrative feature” that incorporates classic buddy-cop tropes in the vein of Lethal Weapon. Beyond that, they don’t really give us much. While I think the only way to make this work is to lean on humor, I’m not sure if that would really be a good idea here. The current relationship between cops and civilians is pretty strained and a movie like this could very easily fall on either side of a very assholish line.
