When the dust settled after the critically unsatisfying ending of Game of Thrones, many fans pointed the finger at David Benioff & D.B. Weiss. They had just signed a deal with Lucasfilm and Disney to create a new trilogy for the Star Wars franchise and many felt that their haste to start working on it was the reason for the shortened GOT season that lacked the quality the show had become known for. Animus for the duo was so great that they ended up canceling their Hall H appearance at Comic-Con this past summer.
Now, official word has come down that the Star Wars trilogy, originally set to hit theaters in 2022 has been abandoned. A big part of this has to do with time constraints around the massive 9-figure deal that the pair signed with Netflix to develop new films and programming. Either way, this feels like a pretty big poke in the eye to both Star Wars fans and Game of Thrones fans.
Here’s the statement from David Benioff & D.B. Weiss:
“We love Star Wars…When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything…There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.”
Here is the statement from Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy:
“David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers,. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”
