Sad Day…
Was Pacific Rim a perfect movie? No, but it was a fun movie with awesome robots. It had a broad appeal. My girlfriend, who didn’t want to see the movie at all, ended up seeing it four times in the theater. We’ve both been waiting patiently as the sequel ramped up development. Now, it looks like that wait, much like the eternal whining of Katniss Everdeen, will never end.
Here’s what THR had to say on the matter today:
Legendary wanted to produce a sequel to del Toro’s Pacific Rim, which was made under the Warners deal and turned into one of those films that grosses a lot ($411 million worldwide) while being so costly that a follow-up isn’t a sure thing. Sources say Legendary liked that the original performed exceptionally well in China, where the company is heavily invested, but for now the project — which had been ramping up to make a release date in August 2017 — has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all).
A lot of this comes from the fact that Universal and Legendary aren’t getting along too well, so Legendary is doing more of their own stuff and work with Warner Bros. Hopefully this isn’t a permanent snag, but just a dark cloud that will eventually clear to reveal a rainbow of Jaegers and Kaijus.
