Disney Aquires The Rights To Anne Frank’s Story

According to Variety, Disney has acquired the rights to film a new version of “The Diary of Anne Frank.” The film will be written and directed by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet.

The story will be based on the famed diary as well as the original play by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich. Mamet will bring his own take to the material however, as he plans to re-frame the story as a younger Jewish girl’s rite of passage in addition to hiding with her family from the Nazis in Amsterdam.

There’s no word on whether this will be live-action or animated, but our guess is that it will most likely be Disney’s next animated full-length feature following “The Princess and the Frog.” More on Disney’s “The Diary of Anne Frank” as it develops.

If it’s not animated… and seriously, we hope it isn’t because it would be wrong on so many levels… it will most likely be a late season prestige film more like Mamet is known for in films like glen garry “Glen Ross” and “Wag the Dog.”
