The Walt Disney Company is planning on remaking one of their own classic titles, “The Black Hole.”
“Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski and producer Sean Bailey have been brought on board according to THR to help reinvent and update the 1979’s sci-fi hit “The Black Hole.” Penning the script will be one of the writers on Louis Leterrier’s “Clash of the Titans” remake, Travis Beacham.
The original followed a group of space explorers aboard the USS Palomino who discovers a lost ship, the USS Cygnus, abandoned hovering outside a black hole. Inside, the Cygnus, the explorers meet a scientist and a crew of faceless “droids,” who explains that his crew had deserted him as he planned to pass through the black hole. The explorers soon discover that the droids are actually the remnants of the former crew who had been lobotomized after trying to form a mutiny.
“The Black Hole” was Disney’s first PG-rated movie, and carried a hefty budget for its time at around $26 Million. Most memorable was the film’s menacing red robot named Maximilian and two smaller, robots, V.I.N.cent and BOB.
No details are known for the remake as studios are keeping things tight lipped. Although it is speculated that we will see the return of Maximilian.
