Doug Liman To Direct Tom Cruise’s Outer Space Action Feature

A couple of weeks ago, it was announced that Tom Cruise would be filming the world’s first action movie in space in conjunction with both Elon Musk’s Spacex and NASA. Now, 24 hours before Spacex launches the first manned American space flight since 1991.

Now, Deadline is reporting that Cruise will be re-teaming with American Made and Edge of Tomorrow director, Doug Liman on the new film. In fact, he’s not just attached, he and Cruise came up with the idea for the film together, Liman has already written a first draft of the script and he’s set to co-produce with Cruise.

The biggest news in this story is that the movie will in fact, take place (at least partially) in space and on the International Space Station. This is a feat that has never been attempted before. As it is, the US has not launched their own manned rockets into outer space since the launch of the Atlantis in 2012. With both NASA and Spacex involved in the film, tomorrow’s Crew Dragon Demo-2 launch could mean the ultimate red or green light for the project. If the launch goes according to plan, you can expect development of the film to accelerate, but if there’s a problem, or something worse, don’t be surprised if the film finds itself cancelled.
