It is hard to imagine the Evil Dead franchise without Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams standing in the middle of the action with a chainsaw hand and a shotgun, but it looks like the latest chapter in the franchise might be completely Ashless.

The new film, Evil Dead Now, will be written and directed by Lee Cronin (Hole in The Ground). If you are worried that he’s just a studio pick, don’t worry. It turns out that franchise creator Sam Raimi chose the director himself. Also, it looks like both Raimi and Bruce Campbell will have something to do with the film behind the scenes.

Here’s what Campbell told Empire about his absence in the new movie:

“From this point forward, they kind of have to stand on their own. Which is fine. And liberating. You could have different heroes, different heroines in this case. This one’s gonna be a little more dynamic…We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue.”
