There are a couple of things I find weird about this trailer. First, why make such a big deal about premiering a new song from Rihanna in it? I’m willing to bet that the vast majority of Trek fans don’t really care about her song being on the soundtrack and the vast majority of her fans are wondering what the hell Star Trek has to do with Rihanna? The second issue I have is Anton Yelchin. I don’t think I saw him a single time in the trailer. I know his Chekov is not as central as Kirk, Spock, Sulu or Uhura, but it almost feels like they went out of their way to edit him from this trailer. I’ve always considered him to be at least on par with Scotty.
So, that takes us to the trailer. It’s good. the movie looks suspenseful and action packed. I’m still not sure it feels like a Star Trek film, but I trust the geek cred of Simon Pegg. I don’t think he’d put out a script that he didn’t feel lived up to the existing universe.
“Star Trek Beyond,” the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin (“The Fast and the Furious” franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew. In “Beyond,” the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.
Star Trek Beyond opens July 22nd and stars Idris Elba, Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, and Karl Urban.
