We didn’t pay a lot of attention to the early news on Alex Proyas’ Gods of Egypt when it was first announced. We also took a flyer when the insanely colorful movie posters were released last week. Now, the first trailer is out and we are taking a look. After all, Proyas deserves a chance on any movie he makes based solely on The Crow and Dark City. You make two movies like that and I’ll check out anything you make as long as M. Night Shamalayan’s name isn’t attached to it.
So, what is Gods of Egypt? It is literally about the Gods of Egypt duking it out. Conceptually, it seems pretty cool. Gerard Butler as Set seems a little bit like he’s just trying to recapture his glory days from 300, but that could work here. I’m not all too familiar with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, but he seems like a good fit for Horus. Then there’s the whole storyline of the brave human, played by Brenton Thwaites, who enlists Horus to help overthrow Set. This could actually be fun. I’m not sure if it will be good, but it could definitely be enjoyable.
The survival of mankind hangs in the balance as an unexpected mortal hero Bek [Brenton Thwaites] undertakes a thrilling journey to save the world. In order to succeed, he must enlist the help of the powerful and vengeful god Horus [Nikolaj Coster-Waldau] in an unlikely alliance against Set [Gerard Butler], the merciless god of darkness, who has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict. As their breathtaking battle against Set and his henchmen takes them into the afterlife and across the heavens, both god and mortal must pass tests of courage and sacrifice if they hope to prevail in the epic final confrontation.
