Even fairy tales must come to an end. And the end is finally here for Dreamwork’s Shrek franchise, which has spawn a trilogy and now a final fourth film which will be a first in 3D.
USA Today has an exclusive first look at images from this final Shrek film. To be honest, they’re not much to look at. Once you’ve seen a smelly disgusting hygiene-challenged ogre you’ve seen them all.
“All that was loved about Shrek in the first film is brought to the final film,” promises Bill Damaschke, head of creative production at DreamWorks.
According to director Mike Mitchell (“Sky High,” “Deuce Bigelow: Male Gigolo”) the premise is a mix between the Brothers Grimm and “It’s a Wonderful Life.” “Shrek Forever After” follows the domestication of the once mighty Shrek (Mike Myers) who finds himself losing his “roar.”
“It used to send villagers running away in terror. Now they run to him and ask him to sign their pitchforks and torches,” says Mitchell.
To regain his ogre mojo, he strikes a slippery deal with Rumpelstiltskin, and learns what it’d be like if he never existed. His world is suddenly changed upside down and his friends Donkey (Eddie Murphy), Puss In Boots (Antonio Banderas) no longer recognize him.
All voice actors are set to be returning for this final hurrah, in addition to some new talents such as “Mad Men’s” John Hamm, a handsome ogre who woos for Fiona’s affection and Kathy Griffin.
So is “Shrek Forever After” really the end for Dreamwork’s green cash cow? “I hate to give away the ending,” Mitchell says, “but yes.”
“Shrek Forever After” won’t arrive until May 21, 2010, but the trailer will premiere December 18 at showings of James Cameron’s “Avatar.”
