Ocean’s 11 was a reboot of a 1960 rat pack film and it was a solid reboot. Its sequels: Ocean’s 12 and 13 were progressively less so. That’s part of the reason I was a bit confused when they first announced Ocean’s 8. It was to be an all-female spin-off of the original series, with Sandra Bullock as the brother of George Clooney’s character, leading a cast of all-star female talent. Personally, I get a little skeptical about any film that makes a point about trying to be all male or all female. It usually means that message is going to trample story, and the whole film is going to suffer for it. That said, the cast that they’ve got lined up (literally, if you look at the poster) is truly remarkable. This is either going to be a great movie based just on the cast, or they are going to have to try really hard to make it suck.
Joining Bullock for their heist is a cast that includes: Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, and Richard Armitage.
Ocean’s 8 opens in theaters on June 8, 2018.
