‘Star Trek: Discovery’ is the next big Star Trek series that you are probably not going to watch… at least not legally. the series, which stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones, Shaza Latif, Clare McConnell, Kenneth Mitchell, Maulik Pancholy, Anthony Rapp, Damon Runyan, Terry Serpico, and Jason Isaacs takes place 10 years before the original voyage of the Starship Enterprise.
So, why aren’t you going to watch this series? There are two main reasons.
1. CBS all-access. This is something that we’ve railed against for a while. CBS has their own on-demand network that they desperately want you to watch. Of course, doing so will cost you $5.99 – $9.99 (depending on whether or not they are willing to put up with ads). The average viewer is not subscribing to see a new Star Trek series. Hell, the average Star Trek fan is not subscribing just to see this series either. That said, it’s a pretty safe bet that a lot of them will torrent the hell out of it.
2. It screams organizational train wreck. This show was supposed to start airing a few months ago. Instead, it started filming two months ago. It lost it’s creator/ Showrunner Bryan Fuller over creative conflicts, and it seems to take place ten years before TOS, but does so with special effects and technology that are far too advanced for the time period in which it is supposed to be happening.
It’s a Star Trek series. I want it to succeed. After watching this trailer, it is hard to imagine the series making it through a five year mission, let alone a single season of episodes.
