While fans may be sad that we won’t be seeing Guillermo directing either the new Pacific Rim: Uprising or the upcoming Hellboy reboot, at least we’ve got ‘The Shape of Water.’ If you aren’t familiar with the film, it falls in line with other movies by Del Toro, like Pan’s Labyrinth. It is a dark fairy tale set in war time, that tells the story of a love between a mute woman and an amphibious man. Stylistically, it looks a lot like the 1980’s French film, Delicatessen. If it is half the film as that one is, we could be looking at a new classic.
One interesting side fact is that frequent Del Toro Collaborator, Doug Jones is playing the role of the amphibious man. That could be why he seems to bare such a striking resemblance to another one of Doug Jones’ characters, Hellboy’s Abe Sapien.
From master story teller, Guillermo del Toro, comes THE SHAPE OF WATER – an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones.
