If you’ve ever seen any footage of Elton John in his heyday, you would figure that his life story would be fantastical enough for a biopic, but no. It’s Elton John, so it’s going to be a musical with fantasy elements built-in.
In the new film from Paramount, Kingsman star Taron Egerton plays a young Elton John. The film is loosely based around the performer’s life, but it looks more like a musical fantasy that’s designed more to capture the feeling of the times than it is to be an accurate retelling of John’s life. It will cover everything from the musicians time at the Royal Academy of Music to his rise to stardom, his relationship with long-time partner Bernie Taupin, and his long-time struggle with drugs.
Joining Egerton for the journey are Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Gemma Jones. Rocketman hits theaters on May 31, 2019.
