We are going to be seeing a lot of trailers in the next few days, mainly the ones that will get released along with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It makes sense that Star Trek Beyond would be on that list as it was written by Simon Pegg and produced by Bad Robot (JJ Abram’s production company).
My first take on it is that it looks like it could be a lot of fun, but it also looks nothing at all like a Star Trek movie. I was also a little struck by the use of Sabotage by the Beastie Boys in the trailer. We know that Abrams has a thing for the rap group and that there are apparently multiple references in the new Star Wars film to them (BB-8’s bb is short for Beastie boys and there’s a pilot who is named as a reference to the Hello Nasty album). Still, I’m surprised he’d be ok with their appearance in Star Trek given that people already complain his other Trek movies are too much like Star Wars.
From director Justin Lin comes STAR TREK BEYOND starring Idris Elba, Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zach Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Karl Urban. In theaters July 22nd.
