Sam Mendes has only made six films, but he was named as the director of the the 23rd James Bond movie, ‘Skyfall’. In this, first, video blog from the set of the film, Mendes talks about his life long love affair with 007 and what working on a movie as big as Skyfall is like.
On his personal experience with Bond, this is what Mendes had to say:
“The roots of my doing this Bond movie start way before anybody approached me because, like everyone else, I have my own personal relationship with Bond which began when I was I suppose about nine or ten years old. I’ve always been a fan of the movies.”
If there was any statement in the piece that gave me pause, it was this:
“I think it is still possible to make a big, entertaining, fabulous, glamorous movie and yet at the same time to say something about the world that we’re living in.”
I love my 007 movies, but I hate when movies get preachy and political. I can only hope that Mendes doesn’t go overboard and create a ham-fisted film designed to use James Bond and Daniel Craig as the delivery mechanism for some argument about alternative fuel.
