We haven’t even seen the first trailer for Jeremy Renner’s return to the role of Clint Barton in his new Hawkeye MCU series for Disney+, but Variety is already talking about a spinoff. The new series, according to the report will be based on the character Echo, played by Alaqua Cox and Etan and Emily Cohen have already been attached to write and exec produce the show.
If you aren’t familiar with Echo, she’s a deaf Native American named Maya Lopez who has the ability to copy anyone’s movements or fighting style. In the comics, she’s often seen crossing paths with anyone from Daredevil and Moon Knight to the Avengers. With the Moon Knight series currently in development starring Oscar Isaacs, there’s a good chance that we could see some world-building crossovers happen between the two shows. Also of note is that, in the comics, she was the first character to hold the name Ronin before she passed it on to Barton. As we saw Hawkeye as Ronin in Avengers: Endgame, there’s a solid chance that the two characters have a history going back at least as far as the five years during which humanity was dealing with “the blip.”
First, however, we’ll see Cox as Echo when she appears in Hawkeye alongside Renner and Haliee Steinfeld (Kate Bishop). Also appearing in the upcoming series are Vera Farmiga, Florence Pugh, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton and Zahn McClarnon.
There’s currently no news on when exactly Hawkeye will drop on Disney+, but we know it is slated for the latter part of 2021. In the meantime, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is of to a great start, The Black Widow is set to finally premiere in May, and Loki will hit the streaming network on June 19th.
