In The MCU, Steve Rogers Is No Longer Captain America

It’s pretty rough being Steve Rogers. In the comics, he’s been reduced to a brainwashed Hydra sleeper agent, and now this.

Taking a break from getting ready for the Infinity Wars, The Russo Brothers sat down to talk with the Huffington Post about the Blu Ray release of Captain America: Civil War. During the interview, the brothers made no bones about the current status of Cap as it pertains to the Avengers and the greater MCU.

“I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity,” said Joe. “[It’s] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”

That means Steve Rogers is no longer Cap. He’s just another super powered fugitive, seeking asylum in Wakanda. We know this doesn’t mean he’ll be sitting out the Infinity Wars. We just don’t know if he’ll be fighting as Captain America or Steve Rogers. We also don’t know if Tony Stark would have the balls to confer the title on another hero of his choosing. I wonder how the naming rights work in the MCU… Does Stark own the brand or is it property of SHIELD and the US government?

If we do see Rogers back in action before he picks his shield back up to take on Thanos, you can bet that they’ll probably send him out under a code name… like Nomad.
