This is going to have a big fat rumor tag because we haven’t been able to verify it neither can the original source. Regardless, this rumored plot for “Ghostbusters 3” would make sense, and go around the entire Bill Murray embargo-cat-and-mouse game he’s been playing about whether he’d reprise his role as Peter Venkman.
The rumor plot is as followed:
Similar to what Steven Spielberg did with “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” “Ghostbusters 3” would pass on the torch… but to who? Well the rumor is that Venkman (Murray) and Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) is to have had a child together. Remember Dana’s son Oscar? It would be revealed that Oscar is in fact Peter’s illegitimate son. In the film, he’d be pre-adult and ready to follow in his father’s footsteps as a ghost buster.
Personally, while I think it would tie the original films and give it a smooth transition to a new generation, it’s unnecessary. We’ve seen Hollywood attempt to this before with “Superman Returns” and “Indiana 4” both with little success. At this point, I think I’d rather have a reboot with cameos and very subtle hints of continuity. I just want a new “Ghostbuster” movie damn it!
Assuming it all goes to plan, “Ghostbusters 3” will be directed by Ivan Reitman, and the film probably won’t be out until at least 2012.
