While the only name we’ve heard near Joaquin Phoenix for the last 8 months has been the Joker, he actually played Jesus in a film that should have come out nearly a year ago, but it kept getting pushed back. The film is called Mary Magdalene and it focuses on the life of the biblical figure by the same name. Playing Magdalene is Girl in The Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara. It doesn’t matter what your religion is, the backdrop of the bible has often provided for some truly stunning filmmaking. With the team behind films like Lion and The King’s Speech tackling this tale, it looks like we could be in for something special. Joining Phoenix and Mara in the film is Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peter.
